I have observed that often people do not realize what they are getting themselves into when they are involved in litigation. Their first major concern should be the cost of legal services. Unfortunately this becomes an issue when the client is well into the litigation process and is confronted with runaway legal costs. My name is Grace Maitland-Carter BA, LLB, I am an experienced lawyer and have 20 years experience doing Solicitor-and-Client Assessment hearings as an Assessment Officer in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. I have reviewed lawyer’s bills rendered to clients in both small and very large complex litigation matters. I have gained the expertise to recognize and focus on the important issues relevant to the dispute which support the reduction of the bill.

Don't Overpay

My legal practice now focuses primarily on services as a consultant to help and advise clients manage their legal affairs. This includes the review of costs of ongoing litigation as well as costs of completed litigation where these legal costs are disproportionately or unreasonably high. Results are important. A client will be unhappy:

  • with a poor result, particularly if he or she feels that the result is largely due to disappointing and inadequate legal services; or
  • regardless of a satisfactory result, where costs simply seem too high.

Cost Assessment

I will review a lawyer’s accounts rendered to the client and advise whether these costs are appropriate or if they should be challenged by way of either:

  • Solicitor-and-Client Assessment hearing
  • by exploring mediation and settlement options.

A client should be aware that your lawyer as the experienced legal professional will have a very definite advantage whether you are challenging your lawyer’s bill through an assessment hearing or mediation. My role in this process is to help you level the playing field to achieve a fair and excellent result.
